Head Lice can affect all types of hair
The first thing to say here is that a head lice infestation is not the result of dirty hair or poor hygiene. In fact the cleaner the hair the more they love it!
Head Lice can affect all types of hair irrespective of its length and condition.
What do they look like?
Head Lice have six legs and are a grey brown depending on the child's hair colour which they mimic for camouflage.
They are about the size of a pinhead when hatched and of a sesame seed when fully grown
How common are they?
They are very common, particularly in children. It is thought that more than 1 in 3 children in the UK are likely to get head lice at some time during the year and many children get multiple infestations each term. They can however pass head lice on to their parents.
What do they live on?
They live on human hair and feed several times a day by biting the scalp and feedng on the blood.
